Wildlife Feeding Stations and Hummingbird Feeders at Getaway Cabins®
For years, our cabins that offer Wildlife Feeding Stations have consistently ranked as our most popular cabins. We are currently working on adding Wildlife Feeding Stations to ALL of our cabins!
The Feeding Stations attract deer, raccoons, squirrels, birds, groundhogs, fox, turkey, and more. Guests find that they are mesmerized by all the activity….in fact, their only complaint is that they can’t sleep because they don’t want to miss looking out the window to see what is at the Feed Station!
We believe that wildlife viewers should be able to watch wildlife without bothering or interfering with their normal activities. This provides an enjoyable viewing experience for the watcher without causing undue harm or stress to the animal.
Our Wildlife Feeding Stations are situated close to your cabin so that you can watch the wildlife feeding right outside of your window. Because much of the animals’ activity is at night, there is a dusk to dawn, dark-sky-friendly light that provides lighting to the feeding area.
Several types of Wildlife food are available for purchase at the Office/Gift Shop where you check in.
Pour sugar and water (1 part sugar to 4 parts water) into a pan and stir to dissolve the sugar, while bringing the mixture to a boil.
Boil for 2 minutes and take from the heat.
Let the mixture cool, then add the nectar to your Hummingbird feeder.
When the nectar starts to get cloudy, it’s time to change it. The amount of time it takes for the nectar to go bad will be determined by the outside temperature. To keep the feeder clean, be sure to rinse it out with hot water several times when you change the nectar. Please do NOT use soap.
Speaking of Hummingbirds…all of our cabins will also offer at least one Hummingbird Feeder (April 15-October 15)! The Hocking Hills area is the ideal location for Hummingbirds, and what better time to enjoy them than when you can watch, relax, and listen to your heart’s content!
This video was taken at the home of the Getaway Cabins® owners, Jennifer & Michael, just after a thunderstorm. While the number of Hummingbirds shown here is unusual, it shows you how many Hummingbirds there are in our area! While you may not see THIS many on your next visit (in season), we can certainly assure you that you will see them on a very regular basis.
Lake Hope State Park has a great program where you can try to
hand-feed Hummingbirds every Wednesday through Sunday during the
months of July and August, 1:00pm–3:00pm at the Nature Center!

Please DO NOT throw any human food over your deck or into your feed station. Also, please do not attempt to feed Raccoons from your back deck under ANY circumstances! They may be cute, but they are wild animals and can be dangerous. They also tear up our Hummingbird Feeders, and we really want to continue to offer them for your enjoyment.
