Getaway Gazette April 2007

Despite the wind and snow over the weekend, Spring is definitely on it's way to the Hocking Hills. We're seeing lots of green, and the cherry trees and red buds our giving us lots of color. We have a new cabin, new check-in procedures, and a new package to tell you about; along with some great event details. We'll even tell you about the newest place to get Hocking Hills apparel, merchandise, and souvenirs!

New Cabin...Woodland Way (#28) Woodland Way is a rustic cottage that sits back off a county road. It is by itself on just under six acres, complete with walking trails. There are two bedrooms that will accommodate four guests, with queen sized beds in each room. The living room features a large wood-burning fireplace. Out back there is a large uncovered deck with hot tub (featuring LED lighting that changes colors, and cascading waterfall) and a fire ring in grassy, open area.

Shoot the Hills Photography Weekend and Competition Whether you are a professional photographer or a novice like me, you really ought to consider attending the 6th Annual Shoot the Hills Photography Weekend and Competition. The Hocking Hills State Park is a photographer’s paradise in the spring! The weekend-long contest takes place throughout four counties in the Hocking Hills region...Hocking, Athens, Fairfield, and Vinton. It is open to professionals, amateurs, and juniors alike. The weekend features a variety of slide shows, exhibits, photo tips, craft demonstrations and special programs open to the public, as well as the photo contest itself. Over $7,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded to 59 winners in the Film, Digital, and Junior Divisions. The event is held April 20-22, and is a fundraiser for the Friends of the Hocking Hills State Park. Proceeds go to build and maintain special photo and wildlife viewing blinds throughout the Park.

New Check-In Proceedures. We'll have two new items to review with you the next time that you check-in for your cabin. The first is a parking permit for you to display on your dashboard so that we can see it from through the windsheild. This lets us know who you are and that you are where you are supposed to be. Please take a moment to jot down your license plate number when you arrive, because we will need to ask your for that information. The second item is that we will review a Guest Emergency card with you, and ask that you keep this with you during your stay. It gives you all the information that you would need in an emergency, if you are locked out of your cabin, or to contact the power company if you were to lose electricity during your stay. These things will just take a few moments, and will ensure that you enjoy a safe and happy stay.

Personal Photographer Package Our newest package is one that is being very well received by our guests. Hocking Hills Photographer, Eric Hoffman, will spend an hour or so with you, photographing you near a cascading waterfall, on a stone bridge or other special park areas in the Hocking Hills, or at your cabin. The Photographer will take 2 photos of twelve different settings or poses for a total of 24 photos. You will receive one 4x6 print each of pose taken in a proof album, and a CD of all photos for reprints and enlargements. Photos may be delivered during your stay, or will be shipped to you at a cost of $6.00. Why not take advantage of this with your next reservation? It's a great way to memorialize a honeymoon, anniversary, or just because!

First Annual Hocking Hills Poker Run May 19th (June 2nd rain date) is the First Annual Hocking Hills Poker Run. It is a 122 mile ride through five State Parks and Wayne National Forest, and is sure to be a hit with anyone who owns a motorcycle and wants a memberable trip. Hope to See You Soon! Please call or visit our website if we can help you plan your next Hocking Hills getaway! Take Care! Jennifer, Michael, and the rest of The Getaway Gang

Getaway Gazette December 2006

Happy Holidays and warm winter wishes from Getaway Cabins! We have lots to tell you about new cabins and exciting Holiday happenings going on in the Hocking Hills! We have several new cabins to tell you about in this edition of the Gazette, as well as to remind you of our lowered winter rates that are in effect now.

New Cabin...Sunset Ridge! Brand new log cabin situated on 80 acres with some of the most beautiful sunsets in the Hocking Hills, the Sunset Ridge cabin accommodates four and is pet friendly. The cabin has a separate bedroom, electric fireplace, and hot tub & gas grill on the back porch. The entrance to the Sunset Ridge property is open, rolling meadow perfect for kite flying by day and star gazing at night. Set 1/2 mile off the road, the cabin is nestled in the woods. There are French doors from both the living area and the bedroom onto the back porch. The back porch is covered over the hot tub, but the other half is uncovered so that you may enjoy either the sun or the night sky.

New Cabin...The Gamebird! The Gamebird is a rustic, Adirondack-like, hunting retreat that has been restored to its original knotty-pine charm. It sits on over one hundred acres that include several miles of walking paths and a stocked pond. The wood-burning stove adds warmth to the living area during the cooler months, and the screened-in porch invites bug-free dining and cool breezes during the warmer months. The Gamebird property is pet-friendly. It has a wildlife feeding area on one side of the cabin, and a fire ring near the gazebo-like structure that provides a perfect spot to grill and enjoy the shade. Ringed by a hardwood and pine forest, the lawn offers the perfect spot for star gazing.

Holidays in the Hills The first four weekends in December, experience "Holidays in the Hills!" Take advantage of 30% off lodging, 15% off shopping and dining, great holiday events, and special offers from businesses throughout the Hocking Hills area. It's a great way to finish up your shopping, or if you're already done, to relax a bit before the holidays hit. Enjoy a special dinner, have your holiday pictures taken, or get a relaxing massage in your cabin. Have lots of presents to wrap before Christmas?? Bring them with you! Wrap in front of the fireplace, and slip into a bubbling hot tub afterwards. There's no better way to do it! The prices on our website already reflect the 30% discount.

Gift certificates are good for one full year, and the recipient can choose their favorite cabin and the dates that work best for them. We can still get Certificates to you (or directly to the recipient) in plenty of time before the holidays. Give us a call, or order online.

Winter Rates Start December 1st! In addition to big discounts during Holidays in the Hills, we have low Winter Rates available most nights December through February. April’s showers have left the Hocking Hills forests dotted with the color of wildflowers. The waterfalls are flowing, and the leaves are returning to cover the trees. There is new growth almost daily. Why not come watch the spring colors paint the landscape? Hike the miles of trails and see the waterfalls, or sit in your hot tub and enjoy watching the antics of our resident Hummingbirds that have returned for the season.

May Flowers Special Now through the end of May, reserve a weeknight in any one of our two-person cabins and take 15% off. We Love Pets! So much so, that we've added several "Pet-Friendly" pages to our website. That way if the unexpected occurs and a pet runs away, someone finding them has our contact information and can get in touch with us right away - rather than trying to reach you at home since this is the number most people have listed on their pet's tag. The tags are available for a $5.00 deposit which will be returned to you when you return the tag when you check out.

Mark down Saturday, September 10th on your calendar, and join us between 10:00am-4:00pm. You'll be able to see all the new cabins at our High Rock Hideaways location, as well as several updated cabins at our Main location. Get ideas for all that you can add to your next getaway with salt glow massages by Blue Valley Massage and samples by the Grouse Nest's Traveling Chef. Make reservations to check into a cabin at 5:00pm that day, and we'll take 10% off your stay! We hope you'll join us!

It may seem like the holidays are far in the future, but they're coming up faster than you think! Make plans to escape the hectic hustle & bustle of the big city shopping malls, and experience holiday shopping the way it was meant to be! If you’re done shopping, slip away for some quiet relaxation before the holidays. Explore acres of State Park areas, and discover waterfalls turned to ice. After a day on the trails, enjoy a great meal, curl up in front of a cozy fire or slip into a bubbling hot tub at one of Hocking Hills’ unique cabins, country inns, or hotels. The event is a unique 24 hour photography contest hosted by the Hocking Hills State Park, and taks place throughout four counties in the Hocking Hills region (Hocking, Athens, Fairfield, & Vinton). The weekend features a variety of slide shows, exhibits, photo tips and special programs as well as the photo contest itself. The contest has both film and digital divisions and is open to professional, amateurs, and juniors alike. More than $6,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded, and it is a really fun event to participate in. Registrations are accepted up to the day of the contest, and we still have cabins available for the weekend.

Mark your calendars now for two exciting events that we have coming up in the month of May. Saturday, May 7th is our Frontier Day Celebration where you can experience the history of the "Hills." Gather 'round the fire, watch demonstrations, and browse gifts and crafts. You can also walk back through time with costumed interpreters at the Frontier Trail Hike at Ash Cave. Saturday and Sunday, May 21st & 22nd, is our Hummingbird Homecoming Celebration. This is a great chance to welcome back our numerous Hummingbirds and learn to attract your own. We have a large selection of unique feeders available in our Gift Shop.

After much debate, the proposed parking fee for Ohio's state parks has been dropped, and there are no immediate plans to charge for parking or admission. Ohio is one of only seven state park systems that does not charge for use of its parks.

So....take advantage of a free attraction just around the corner and come spend some time with us this spring. We'd love to have you! Take Care! Jennifer

Getaway Gazette December 2004

Happy Holidays from Getaway Cabins! We have lots to tell you about new cabins and exciting Holiday happenings! We have several new cabins that have just opened to share with you in this edition of the Gazette, and will have two more to tell you about in the next edition. American Hollow (#9) and Silver Wolf (#12) are one room log cabins at the front of our High Rock Hideaways location, which is just down the road from our Main Location. These cabins are clustered, along with several others that are still under construction, on a wooded hillside. There are some walking trails on the property, and it is just a short walk to a fire-road that will take you on a hike to Cedar Falls or into a beautiful and almost unkown area of the State Park called "The Gulf." You will find links to the Cabin Page for each of the new cabins from the "Our Cabins" page but be sure to visit the "Cabin Photo Album" for each cabin to see even more pictures of each.

American Hollow (#9) is a brand new one room log cabin that sits down over a hill. For that reason, we highly recommend a four-wheel drive vehicle during the winter. This cabin has a wrap-around deck on three sides, and is pet-friendly. This cabin does not get television reception, so be sure to take advantage of the free Video/DVD library at the office when you check in.

The Silver Wolf (#12) is also a brand new one room log cabin that sits in a clearing next to the shared driveway at High Rock. It is very cozy, and is sure to be a hit with all of the "Wolf Lovers" out there.

We hope you'll travel over the river and through the woods to join us at "Holidays in the Hills" during the first three weekends in December. Escape the hectic hustle and bustle of big city shopping malls, and experience holiday shopping the way it was meant to be! You can actually ENJOY shopping this year, and take advantage of great discounts (15% on shopping and 30% on lodging), great events, and special offers from many local businesses. Already done shopping?? Slip away for some quiet relaxation for the holidays. Or...make a weekend stay the perfect early gift for that someone special! Add a special dinner, massages, and have your holiday pictures taken for a perfect holiday package.

In addition to big discounts during Holidays in the Hills, we have low Winter Rates now through the end of February. Weeknights (Sunday-Thursday) are just $89 for two in any cabin, and most weekends are almost 20% off our regular rates! Holidays are excluded, and the Winter Rates may not be combined with any other discount or special. Take a look at our new Rate Calendar, to see exactly what rates apply and when! If you've never been to the Hocking Hills in the winter, you're really missing out-There's nothing like sitting in a hot tub and watching it snow! Most of our guests that have experienced the Hills in the Winter make it a yearly tradition.

Why not give a stay at Getaway Cabins?? We offer Gift Certificates in any denomination, and they are good for one year. The recipient can decide when and in which cabin they want to stay. Just give us a call, or even order your certificates online.

We hope that we'll see you soon, but if not, we hope that you have a joyful holiday! We are truly thankful for our fantastic Guests and your continued patronage.

Getaway Gazette August 2004

Please join us! Saturday, September 11th is our 2nd Annual Open House. If you've never stayed at our cabins, or if you stay all the time and want to check a new cabin for your next visit, this is the time to do it! We find that the cabins stay so booked, that it's hard for anyone to get in to take a look at them. So, to give you a chance to tour the cabins, they'll be open between 10:am-2:00pm at our Main Location and Bishop's Ridge locations. The Traveling Chef will be on hand to introduce you to their romantic dinners prepared in your cabin, and Blue Valley Massages will be giving Salt Glow Massages. We have several BRAND NEW new cabins under construction, and hope to have one or two finished in time to unveil them during the Open House. While you're here, be sure to visit our Gift Shop, Misty Ridge. It's sure to be a great day, and you can gather all sorts of information for planning your first or next visit!

Don't want to leave?? Rent a cabin for the night of the Open House on Saturday, Sept. 11th and get 10% off. Check in will not be until 5:00pm so that everyone can finish touring the cabins, and we can get them freshened up for you. This includes all cabins at the Main Location and Bishop's Ridge. All are currently available. Please call and let us know that you are taking advantage of the Open House Special.

Feed stations attract wildlife. We've added individual wildlife feeding stations at each cabin at the Main Location and at High Rock Hideaways. Guests report seeing deer, turkey, skunk, oppossom, racoon, and all sorts of birds. Each pile has a spotlight directed on it at night so that you can see the animals come up. The only complaint so far, is that no one can get any sleep because they have to keep getting up to see what's at the feed pile! We'll be adding feed stations to the other cabins as we go.

NEW Guest Photo Album. We really enjoy it when guests send us pictures that they've taken during their stay, and now we have a way that you can enjoy them too! Send us photos that you've taken while you're here, and we'll post them in the Guest Photo Album on our website for all to see. You can send photos by regular or e-mail, and we'll post them right away. You can see the two pictures that inspired this idea below. We've been told that guests are getting great photos of animals at the feed piles, and can't wait to post them here!

For an unforgettable running experience, the Hocking Hills Indian Run is on September 18th this year. The Indian Run is a set of races (5K, 10K, 20K and 60K) in the beautiful Hocking Hills. Beginning at the Hocking Hills State Park Dining Lodge, the trail winds through vast wooded areas of the Hocking Hills State Park and Hocking State Forest, crossing streams, deep gorges, shimmering waterfalls and lush forests, leading uphill and down. The trail is the ultimate challenge to the runner’s power of concentration.

Campfire wood warning. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources has requested that visitors to the area not bring campfire from home with them. This is in an attempt to stop the spread of the Ash Bore Beetle. You can pick up quite a bit of dead-fall in the woods, or purchase firewood at numerous locations in the area.

It is centrally located to the Hocking Hills State Park areas, and offers 10 miles of walking trails without even leaving the property.

Getaway Gazette May 2004

Hello again from the Hocking Hills, and welcome to Summer! It certainly seems as though it arrived all at once. We're happy to report that we're blissfully "Cicada free" down here in the Hills. If those nasty critters have your ears ringing, you might just need to escape to the peace and quiet of the Hills for a few days. Keep reading for a great special for the next two weeks, some last minute openings for the upcoming holiday weekend, June events, and NEW cabin news.

If you can be flexible with your schedule, we can be flexible with our rates! Book any weeknight between now and June 3rd, and get a second weeknight at HALF PRICE. Good on new reservations only. If you already have reservations scheduled, add an additional weeknight to your stay at half price. Let us know that you are taking advantage of our Internet special when booking.

There are some neat events coming up in the month of June. See our Calendar of Events (link below) for more details on each. On June 4th & 5th you can celebrate music, culture, and history at the HockHocking Folk Festival in Nelsonville. The following weekend, June 11th & 12th, The Old Bear's Den has a two-day photo camp for kids where they can learn photo skills and get close ups of birds of prey. June 18th-20th, the International Washboard Festival offers great bands with washboard musicians from around the world. These are some very neat events, and you won't find them anywhere else!

We're working furiously to get our newest cabin, The Landing, open by this weekend. This will be Cabin #16 and is located at our High Rock Hideaways location, just beyond The Overlook (#15). High Rock is our most unique property, with 224 acres with 10 miles of walking trails to caves, waterfalls, and rock formations. This property is very Appalachian in feel-You'll pass several other houses and trailers, and may have to wait for chickens and ducks to cross the road. The two cabins sit close to each other but nestled back into the woods, overlooking a pond. You'll see us feeding the ducks and geese daily, and you're likely to hear a rooster or two in the morning. The Landing is a one room log cabin with a beautiful forest view from the back porch. This cabin is smaller than The Overlook, but has a charm all its own! We'll have pictures up on the internet just as soon as it's completed! This is THE location for serious hikers.

Thanks so much to all of you who have asked for updates on Mike's condition! He is back home after finishing chemotherapy and radiation for throat cancer, and is doing well. He's had two follow up appointments in DC where he did his treatment, and everything is looking good. He's back to work almost full time, now, so hopefully you'll run into him on your next visit. The many thoughts and prayers from our readership have been a huge support to us. Thanks again!

New movies to our Video/DVD Lending Library this month are Charlie's Angels:Full Throttle, Matrix Revolutions, Radio, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and The Missing. Movies are free here at the office when you check in, and you can just leave them in your cabin when you check out!

We wish you a wonderful start to your week, and hope to see you soon! Come on and Head for the Hills!

Getaway Gazette January 2004

Winter is now upon us! There's more than just a chill in the air, but it sure makes cuddling up in a cozy cabin in front of the fire that much more special! The caves and waterfalls are sparkling with ice formations, and just begging to be photographed.

Now through the end of February, every cabin is at our Winter Rate of $89/night for two people on Sunday through Thursday. We've even continued a discounted rate (about 20% off!) on all remaining weekends (except Valentine's Day weekend) through the end of February. You can find cabins by the reduced weekend rate (see the dropdown menu on the "Our Cabins" page), or see the Winter Rate featured on each and every cabin page.

On February 7th, we highly recommend the eight hour photography workshop by Eric Hoffman highlighting the waterfalls and ice formations in the area. It's our favorite time of year to photograph, and we guarantee you'll go home with some pictures you'll never forget! There is a link to the Old Bear's Den in our links to area activities~take a look!

Getaway Gazette November 2003

It's hard to believe that it's November already! The leaves are mostly off the trees, but we have some beautiful harvest vistas remaining here in the hills. Did you miss visiting us in October? The weather outlook is wonderful, so why not make a fall trip now? You'll be thankful you did!

I've lived in the Hocking Hills for several years now, and can honestly say that Winter is my favorite seasons. You can virtually have the caves to yourselves, and the ice formations are amazing! Of course, cuddling by the fireplace and sitting in the hot tub watching it snow aren't too bad either!!

For those who want it all, just add our Fireside Romance Package! From a candlelit dinner of Lobster Tail and Tenderloin Steak to champagne, roses, and more, this package will make any night special! Just add a fireplace, hot tub, and that special someone, and there's nothing more you could ask for! This package can be added to any stay, even one that you've already scheduled. Just give us a call to add a little romance!

Many, many thanks to those of your who have been keeping Mike in your thoughts and prayers! We've been overwhelmed at the number of you who have called and e-mailed to see how he's doing. Michael was diagnosed with throat cancer over the summer, and we've been driving back and forth to Washington, DC for his chemotherapy. He just started the next phase of chemotherapy and daily radiation last week, and will stay in DC for the remainder of his treatment. He's made it through with flying colors, and we're hoping for more of the same until he's done. Thanks again for all of your support!

Getaway Gazette August 2003

All of the new log cabins at Bishop's Ridge are now open, and are proving to be very popular! This location is about 4 1/2 miles from our Main Location and office, and offers log cabins that accommodate two. Each has an outdoor hot tub, electric fireplace, and full kitchen. Several of the cabins are pet friendly, and they are all romantic, comfortable, and cozy! The Honeybee Hideaway has been open for a year now, and is one of our most popular cabins. We've added The Dragonfly and Fox Run that are both one room cabins, and The Homestead and The Retreat that have open loft bedrooms upstairs. You can take a look at each here on the website!

Haven't seen all of our cabins?? That's not unsual even for our loyal repeat guests. We've added quite a few in the past two years, and they tend to stay so full that it's difficult to even stick your head in to take a peek. As a result, we've scheduled an Open House so that you can take a look at most of our cabins. Mark your calendars now for Saturday, September 6th between 10:00am-2:00pm. Our Main Location, Nature's Pointe, Benton Cove, and Bishop's Ridge Locations will all be open so that you can visit and tour each cabin. We'll also feature special services and discounts at several other local business during this time, so watch for more details. We look forward to meeting you and showing you around!

Due to popular demand, we've added outdoor hot tubs at the Lilly Pad and the Enchanted Garden cottages at our Benton Cove location! Both are two bedroom cottages that sleep four, and they still feature indoor jacuzzi tubs. Now, depending on the weather, you can choose to sit in a bubbly tub out on the back deck or inside the cottage!

New video titles in the past couple months are Antz, Call of the Wild, Charlotte's Web, Drumline, Ghost Ship, Journey of Natty Gan, Deer Hunter, Double Jeopardy, Maid in Manhattan, One Hour Photo, Original Sin, Red Dragon, Swim Fan, and Two Weeks Notice. If there are any titles you would like to see us add to our collection, please let us know. There is no charge to rent movies, and we are also adding DVD's for the newer cabins that have DVD players in addition to VCR's.

If you don't see or hear quite as much from Michael and I over the next few months, it's because they'll be traveling quite a bit. Mike has been diagnosed with Throat Cancer, and will be undergoing treatment at George Washington University in Washington, DC. He will be able to stay there in the area during the period where he's doing daily chemo & radiation, and I will most likely be traveling back and forth. It will be a rough few months, but we're working towards a complete cure and many more years here at Getaway Cabins!!

We just came back from our first purchasing trip for our new gift shop, Misty Ridge. Plans are in the works to open here in the next couple months, but might be pushed back a bit due to Mike's health condition. We look forward to bringing you all sorts of unique gifts and collectibles! We hope to have some previews for you by our Open House in September.

Come see us soon! We'd love to have you!

Jennifer

Getaway Gazette March 2003

Eeeks! Sure has been a long time since we've updated this newsletter, huh? Guess time just got away from us with all the growth and changes here at Getaway Cabins! I promise to be more dilligent in the future.

We are proud to introduce two new cottages this month, the Enchanted Garden (#18) and The Lilly Pad (#19) at our Benton Cove location. These two twin cottages sit next to each other on Big Pine Road, and are great for groups or couples traveling together who still want their own privacy. Both have gas log fireplaces, indoor jacuzzi tubs, tv & vcr, ceiling fans, central heat & air, gas grills, standard kitchen, front & back porch, and all towels & linens. Be sure to visit each cabin page for details and the Cabin Photo Album for addtional pictures of each.

To keep up with all of this growth and expansion, we've added a second phone line and a second computer, so that you will always be able to reach us by phone, e-mail, and the "Live Help" chat on our website. Although growing, we never want to give up the personal touch that sets Getaway Cabins apart. Mike & Jennifer (and the Chihuahuas) have moved out of the office/cabin to make room for additional laundry facilities, and furniture's been moved around to make room for our ever-increasing video library. Don't worry...the cats will still greet you when you check in and love to help you pick out videos. Our newest addition "Bear," a black lab puppy, comes to the office each day just to be sure that each guest gets a real welcome when they come to check in! In response to requests for pictures of Bear and the cats, we'll see if we can't get some photos posted here on the site.

Speaking of pets..... We've been overwhelmed at the response to our first three pet-friendly cabins, so we've added more! We will now accept pets also at the Guest Nest (#3), The Shawnee (#5), Settler's Hollow (#9), and Honeybee Hideway (#11). Just look for the "Pet-Friendly" icon next to each cabin that accepts pets.

New Video Titles! New videos this month are Bloodwork, The Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood, Enough, Panic Room, Sweet Home Alabama, Unfaithful, and Windtalkers. Please let us know if there are other movies that you would like to see us add. As always, there is no charge to borrow videos.

Unfortunately, I'm running behind on updating our Calendar of Events. Until I get all that info entered, you might want to check the calendar at www.1800hocking.com to be sure you know what and when things are going on in the Hills.

Our Winter Special will run for three months next year...December, January, and February. Weeknights for two in ANY cabin will be just $89.00. You can find all of the details on our "Specials" page. Make plans now to join us next winter!

More next month!

Getaway Gazette December 2002

Welcome to winter! We've already had a couple of beautiful snows this season, and have seen some spectacular ice formations. To be the first hikers at Old Man's Cave on a morning when it's blanketed in snow is an unbelievable feeling! For those of you who have never experienced the Hocking Hills in the winter, you are really missing out! We're offering a low, low winter weekday rate and a fantastic Fireside Romance package in the hopes that you'll give a cozy winter stay a try.

Our Winter Special rate is just $69 per night in any cabin during the week!

Our Fireside Romance Package is a one night weekday stay in the cabin of your choice, a one hour full body massage in front of the fire, and a romantic dinner for two prepared by the Traveling Chef in your cabin. All this for only $199!

See our "Specials" page for details and restrictions on both of these winter deals.

New additions to our Video Library this month are Eight Legged Freaks, Insomnia, Monsters Inc, Spider-Man, and The Count of Monte Cristo. Let us know if there are titles that you would like to see us add.

You'll notice that we've added two new photo galleries to our website. They are still under construction, and there is another on the way, but they should give you lots of additional information as you're planning your stay. The Cabin Album will give you additional pictures of each cabin, and for you hunters...check out our hunting trophy gallery. More additions and improvements to come!

Have a Happy and Safe Holiday Season!

Getaway Gazette October 2002

Ok....Hopefully no one will notice that I never got our September news online and am jumping forward to October!! I'll just assume that you were all as busy as we were and never missed it! :) We spent the month doing a lot of fall clean-up, and really enjoyed our first time sponsoring and volunteering at the 2002 Hocking Hills Indian Run. It was quite a sight to see 460 people running through the Hocking Hills State Park! The weather here is really beginning to cool off and it's starting to FEEL like Fall. We just got all the gas fireplaces up and ready to go!

New video titles this month are Ali, Black Hawk Down, Collateral Damage, Hearts in Atlantis, I am Sam, John Q, Kate & Leopold, Showtime, The Mothman Prophecies, and Vanilla Sky. We also had a number of videos donated to us, so our library is over 200 movies strong. Just the perfect thing to curl up to in front of the fire on a winter stay!

Getaway Gazette August 2002

Wow! It's hard to believe that we're already into August! We have lots of folks here on long stays with us this month, getting that last bit of vacation in for the year. Like most of the country, we've sure had our share of heat and humidity! At least it's much cooler in the shade of the forest or hiking through the caves!

New movie titles that we've added to our collection this month are A Beautiful Mind, Captain Corelli's Mandolin, Domestic Disturbance, Joy Ride, Riding in Cars with Boys, Someone Like You, The Musketeer, and The Others. As always, all of our video rentals are at no charge. They're nice to have if the weather isn't cooperating, or if you just need to relax after a long day hiking.

We're enjoying watching a whole new deer population this year. As always, we've enjoying the does and fawns (they're just so cute when they have spots!!), but we're also seeing an increased number of bucks. We're getting more bucks that come to visit on a regular basis, they've got bigger antlers, and they're around during more times of the day. It's almost impossible to get Mike away from the window, or to get him to stop video taping them. If you don't want to see HOURS of footage, don't ask Mike to show you his deer tapes!

One great thing about the upcoming fall season in the Hocking Hills is the number of really neat events going on. At the beginning of September we have the Hocking County Fair running in Logan from September 9th-14th. Later in the month is the Annual Hocking Hills Indian Run on September 21st, and the Annual Fall Arts & Crafts Show on the weekend of September 28th & 29th. For a complete listing of upcomng activities, visit our "Calendar of Events" page.

Getaway Gazette July 2002

Happy Summer!! Things here at Getaway remain busy as always, especially now that we're up to TEN cabins! Settler's Hollow (#9) has been renting now since mid-June, and the Blue Jay (#10) has been open since July 1st. Response to both has been overwhelmingly positive! We hope that you'll give them each a try in the near future. Keep in mind that all of the cabins are booking about six weeks out, and that October will probably fill even sooner than that. Don't wait on making your fall reservations!

New movie additions to our video library this month are AI (Artificial Intelligence), K-Pax, Memento, The Princess Bride, Serendipity, and Zoolander. As always, video rentals are FREE!

Construction Update! Work is almost complete on the new front porch here at the office and on the much-needed laundry room addition. Now that we’ve grown to ten cabins, we find that we certainly need both! Let us know what you think of the “face lift” on your next visit!

Have you signed up for our new E-mail list?? If you haven’t done so yet, make sure to sign up. You’ll be kept informed of activities, events, and other news in the Hocking Hills. You can even sign up to receive information on particular subjects (for example, hiking, fishing, or photography) and we’ll keep you updated with what’s happening in the area that you might be interested in!

Getaway Gear is here! On your next visit, make sure to check out our new Getaway Cabins T-Shirts. They are for sale in the office, along with logo coffee mugs and walking sticks. Make sure to take a little piece of Getaway Cabins and the Hocking Hills home with you!

Travel by train back in time for an authentic 1850’s dinner! This will now be a monthly event, offered on the last Friday of every month. Take a one hour train ride on the Hocking Valley Scenic Railroad to historic Robbins Crossing. There you will enjoy an authentic 1850’s gourmet meal served by the community in authentic costume and with historic perspective. Live entertainment is provided, and all taxes and gratuity are included. Price is just $55 per person. Cuisine is provided by Hocking College’s Award Winning Culinary Department, and Historical Interpretive Services provided by Hocking College’s School of Natural Resources. For reservations call 740-753-3531.

Shaws Restaurant and Inn is offering a Wine Tasting and Sale on July 22nd, from 5-7:30pm. Cost is $20 which includes wine, hors d’oeuvres, tax, and tip. Call 1-800-654-2477. The Lancaster Festival runs for 10 days starting on July 18th. The Festival and Wine Tasting would make a great day trip to Lancaster!

We’ve been adding new “Area Links” on our website, and still have much more information to add. If you haven’t visited those pages recently, check for new additions. For instance, check out the “Hiking” links for trail maps for each of the area’s most popular hiking spots.

A new “Grand Buffet” Chinese Restaurant opened this month in Logan (in the new Walmart Shopping Center). We’ve researched it thoroughly :) and can highly recommend it! If you’re looking for a casual atmosphere, great food and lots of it~give the Grand Buffet a try. You’ll find a copy of their menu in each cabin, along with those of other restaurants in the area.

Been wanting your own little piece of the Hills? At our Nature’s Pointe Location a neighbor has a beautiful cabin on five acres, and two additional five acre lots for sale. Contact us by phone or e-mail if you are interested in more information!

Getaway Gazette June 2002

We're finally finished with construction over at Settler's Hollow (#9)! Woo hoo! It's been over a year, but we finally did it! It has a loft bedroom upstairs, with a pull out futon downstairs so it will sleep up to four. It is one of our roomier cabins and has one of the larger hot tubs. The pictures here on the website should be updated by the 12th or so. If you've visited that page before, you may need to hit your "refresh" button to see the new photos.

We'll also be adding a new Cabin #10 by the first of July. The Blue Jay is a one room suite that is right off route 664, so it's very convenient to all area attractions. It is not in the woods, but has a very large porch with great views from the porch and hot tub. Like our one room cabins, it has a queen size bed and a futon, but will only sleep two people. It has hardwood floors and cathedral ceilings. Pictures should also be online by the 12th.

New videos for the month are Behind Enemy Lines, Jeepers Creepers, "O", Oceans 11, Phantom Menace, Proof of Life, Snow Dogs, and Sweet November.

We're still under construction here at our home & office, but we're gaining on it! The logs are in place for the new laundry room addition, but it's still awaiting a roof. Much of the new front porch at the office entrance is also in place. Our "official" office hours here to answer phones and for guests to check out videos, etc... will be 9:00am-8:00pm, although we'll still grab the phone before or after those hours if we're around.

We've added a new Live Help/Chat feature on the website. If you haven't tried it yet, give it a whirl! It's an easy way to ask questions or to check availability, etc... We try to be "online" as much as possible, but we are often busy greeting guests or out working in the cabins. If we are not available, you will have the option of leaving an e-mail message which we will respond to just as soon as we get back in the office. We always love to hear from you!

We've had many guests take advantage of the special services listed on our "Indulgences" page, and have had a fantastic response. We can have roses or a balloon bouquet waiting for you in the cabin when you arrive, you can enjoy a relaxing massage in the privacy of your cabin, or even have a romantic dinner for two prepared by the Traveling Chef from the Grouse Nest restaurant. Whether you are regular guests or coming for your first trip, consider adding one of these special touches to your visit!

The doe that we reported was pregnant has given birth!! We've not seen the babies yet, but she usually has twins. Hopefully, we'll soon be seeing new fawns feeding along the driveway several times a day! We also have a baby groundhog, and think that the pair of grey foxes have also given birth to their new little ones. There will certainly be lots of new wildlife to watch this season! We should also have a huge population of frogs due to all the tadpoles we've been seeing in both ponds!

Getaway Gazette May 2002

Happy Mother's Day to all of the mothers out there!! If you are looking for a great Mother's Day gift, consider giving Mom some time away at Getaway Cabins. You can even add roses in the cabin, a balloon bouquet, a relaxing massage, or a romantic dinner prepared for her in the cabin! You can schedule the trip yourself, or puchase a Gift Certificate to present to Mom on the "big day," and let her schedule the trip herself. What a great way to thank Mom for all she does!

Wedding season is quickly approaching! Everyone knows that Getaway Cabins is the perfect honeymoon spot, but it's also a great bachelor/bachelorette party location, and gift certificates make great "thank you" gifts for the bridal party. Needless to say, gift certificates make the perfect wedding gifts, too!

New videos added to our library this month are Black Knight, Don't Say a Word, Driven, One Fine Day, Space Cowboys, The Patriot, The Peacemaker, and Thirteen Days. We need to add more shelves to be able to keep up with all of the movies! You can sign them out when you check in or during your stay, as always...there's no charge!

Construction continues on Settler's Hollow (#9) and we are working on furnishing and decorating it. We're still dependent on the weather, but hopefully coming into the home stretch. Unfortunately, the owners of Harp Hollow (#10) have decided not to have us manage their cabin, so we will not have that one coming up. The Honeybee Hideaway opened in mid-April and has been extremely popular.

For those of you who've seen Michael lately, you'll know that he's looking more and more like Grizzly Adams every day. With that in mind, we'll offer monthly nature snippets from "The Griz." This month he wants to let you know about the wildflowers and other plantings he's been working on. Mike did a lot of research on indigenous plants and wildflowers that will attract and feed our local deer, turkey, fox, hummingbirds, butterflies, and birds, and has strewn seeds on either side of the walking paths that wind through the woods on our property. The plants are already coming up, and should make their colorful presence known in the next few months.

Each day, we feed the deer and turkey along the driveway in front of our home & office. Many of you have enjoyed seeing them as you drive in and out, while taking a walk, or even sitting on our porch. We now have a new visitor who stops in at various time~a beautiful male peacock! His visits during most times of the day are fairly eradic, but you can usually find him stopping traffic between 7:30-8:00 each evening. He's quite a sight, and his cries are quite impressive!

Lilyfest will be held on July 12, 13, & 14th. If you have never experienced it, we would highly recommend it! You can stroll through beautiful gardens, see displays by over 40 area artists, listen to a variety of musical groups, purchase plants, and eat great food. For more information, visit their website at www.lilyfest.com. We have two cabins left for that weekend, and it also makes a great day trip. We hope to see you there!

The Gulf! Behind our property, there is an area of the Hocking Hills State Park called the Gulf. It has beautiful caves, rock formations, and waterfulls, and is not well known. We've marked a trail through our property to help you find your way there. It is a beautiful hike, but not for the faint-of-heart. Make sure to check it out on your next visit~you'll be thankful for the hot tub afterwards!

Getaway Gazette April 2002

This month will mark the opening of our THIRD LOCATION!! The Honeybee Hideaway (Cabin #11) will be opening on April 12th. This will be a one room cabin (similar in size to the Sunflower Chateau and Butterfly Bungalow) with fantastic sunrises off the back porch! It is located at our new Bishop's Ridge location, just 4 miles from the main location and within easy driving distance to the caves. By popular demand, this cabin will have its own fire ring outside.

New movie titles this month include Evolution; Heartbreakers; Joe Dirt; Lara Croft: Tomb Raider; Me, Myself & Irene; Men of Honor; Shreck; The Animal; and Training Day. Please let us know by e-mail if there are specific movies you would like to see us add to our library.

Our highlighted event this month is the first annual "Shoot the Hills Nature Photo Weekend." Scheduled for 4/19-4/21, this event will feature a nature photo program, slide shows, and a photography contest. The contest is open to amateurs and pros alike, and will have great prizes and awards. Registration takes place on Friday. Questions?? Call 740-774-6243 or 740-385-6841.

We're still working away on the Settler's Hollow (Cabin #9) and Harp Hollow (Cabin #10) construction! Everything, at this point, is dependent on the weather. We're currently accepting Webervations requests for after 6/1, although we hope to open these two cabins before then.

The Hummingbirds will be returning soon & we're stocking up on feeders to be ready for them! For the last couple of years, the resident Hummingbirds (Homer & Harriet) over at the Nature's Pointe location have returned the first weekend of May. We'll be putting up lots of feeders at ALL of the locations to be sure to attract more of these feathered wonders this year!

We are considering making one of our cabins a "Pet-Friendly" cabin & we'd like to hear your opinion on the pros and cons. Getaway Cabins has always had a "no pets" policy, but we hear from many of you that are disappointed that you cannot bring your furry friends. As pet-lovers ourselves, we'd like to know what YOU think. Please e-mail us and let us know!

We're expecting!! Well....not us, but several of our deer are! It looks as though several of our does are expecting new arrivals. We should have fawns frolicking here at the property by mid-June. The deer feed in the morning and evening along our drive at the main location, and we are also feeding them at the Nature's Pointe and Bishop's Ridge locations (the turkey usually feed in the morning and mid afternoon). We are currently planting clover, winter wheat, and a high protein mix here at the main property to attract and feed all types of wildlife, including the deer.

Getaway Gazette March 2002

Construction update: The Settler's Hollow (#9) and Harp Hollow (#10) Cabins are still under construction at the Nature's Pointe location. We had hoped that they would be completed and renting by now, but evidently Mother Nature had other plans! All that remains is finish work and the installation of the septic tanks. If the weather cooperates, they should open sometime in April.

You'll also notice some construction going on here at our office in the near future too. As soon as the weather breaks, we'll be adding on a larger laundry room and office, as well as doing some finish work on the exterior and adding a new roof. Please pardon any dust!

New movie titles this month include A Kight's Tale, Almost Famous, America's Sweethearts, Autumn in New York, Bridget Jones's Diary, City Slickers, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Icebreaker, Moulin Rouge, Scent of a Woman, The Distinguished Gentleman, The Fast and the Furious, The Messenger, and Wolf.

As we go into our busier season our Cleaning Supervisor, Tricia, will be helping Jennifer in the office and on the phones more often. So, if you hear a different voice on the phone, it'll be Tricia! Say "Hi!"

The Hocking Hills Farmers Flea Market starts back up on April 6th. It is open each Saturday from 9:00-4:00, and is located at Routes 33 and 374. You might want to stop by on your next visit!
